NIAF honors chairman's memory with endowment fund
During his years as Chairman, Vice Chairman and a NIAF Board Member, Dr. A. Kenneth Ciongoli personified the Italian American spirit and the great contributions of Italian culture in America. His death on October 28, 2008 after a year-long battle with cancer has left a void.
To honor his memory, the NIAF Board of Directors has established the Dr. A. Kenneth Ciongoli Colloquium Endowment. The Endowment will fund and host panel discussions and debates on a variety of topics at eight Ivy League colleges and other select universities throughout the United States. This important program will examine the global contributions of Western civilization in addition to our culture, heritage and history.

Foundation welcomes De Santis
James R. De Santis, an executive with more than 24 years experience leading nonprofits, has been named NIAF’s National Executive Director and Chief Administrative Officer effective November 1, 2008.
“It is truly a personal and professional privilege to be chosen as NIAF’s new executive director. I will approach this responsibility with deep respect for the tradition of the organization, a passion for its mission and commitment to continue its growth and impact,” De Santis said.
De Santis has previously served as president of The Astronauts Memorial Foundation at the Kennedy Space Center, where he managed a $30-million program for the construction and programming of a national memorial and space education center. In addition, he has held executive positions at Earle Palmer Brown Advertising, the National Wildlife Federation, The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission and the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Salamone retires after quarter century
Former NIAF National Executive Director John B. Salamone retired October 31, 2008 after 25 years serving the Foundation. Salamone will continue to work with NIAF as a consultant.
In 1984, Salamone began working with NIAF, concentrating on building the young organization’s annual Washington gala. Under his leadership, the NIAF gala has emerged as one of the most financially successful annual events in the nation. Salamone was subsequently named NIAF National Executive Director and Chief Administrative Officer by a unanimous vote of the Board of Directors at the New York Stock Exchange in 2001.
A native New Yorker, Salamone holds degrees in journalism and government from the University of Maryland. He resides in Oakton, Virginia, with his wife of 27 years, Kathy. They have two children.

Search continues for Italian-American bone marrow donors
The search for a bone marrow donor continues for Christopher Florentino, 36, who was diagnosed with a recurrence of Mantle Cell Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and needs a second bone marrow transplant for a cure.
In 1998, Florentino, a father of two from Flushing, Queens, was diagnosed with the disease. After being treated with his own cells, the cancer went into remission. In March 2008, he was diagnosed again.
The Florentinos are working to help all patients in need by conducting an online bone marrow drive. Associated tissue typing costs are covered by a fund established in Christopher’s honor.
Millions have joined the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry, but there are not enough donors to meet the needs of all patients, especially those from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The best chance of a match for Christopher is from the Italian American/European community.

Vote on New Jersey’s Hall of Fame
Cast your vote for Guglielmo Marconi and other Italian Americans to ensure they are inducted into the 2008 New Jersey Hall of Fame.
Guglielmo Marconi was an Italian-born inventor who won the Nobel Prize for his “contribution to the development of wireless technology” and did pioneering work in New Jersey. Marconi is one of six nominees in the “Enterprise” category for the 2008 New Jersey Hall of Fame.
To vote, visit www.NJHallofFame.org and: 1) cast your vote in all five categories, 2) give special consideration to Guglielmo Marconi in the “Enterprise” category and 3) forward this request to your friends.

MBA scholarships offered in Milan
MIP, the business school of the prestigious university Politecnico di Milano in Italy, offers scholarships to international students from the United States for full-time study at its one-year MBA program.
Although the program is taught in English, students are able to experience life in Milan, one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan cities. An Italian language course is included as part of tuition fees. The program also offers field work opportunities in Italy and abroad.
Scholarships are limited; the final application deadline is December 31, 2008.
